Your Day-by-Day Journey: Lyon to Avignon
Day 1 — Lyon, France: Welcome Aboard! Our adventure begins as we embark the Viking Delling right in the heart of Lyon, France’s culinary capital. Get settled into your elegant stateroom, explore the ship, and soak in your first views of this magnificent city from the water.
Day 2 — Lyon, France: The Culinary Capital Welcomes Us Today we dive into everything Lyon has to offer. We’ll walk through the charming old town, visit the magnificent St. Jean Cathedral, and make our way up to the hilltop Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière for sweeping views over the city. Lyon has a way of surprising people, and in the very best way.
Day 3 — Lyon & Vienne, France: From Vineyards to Roman Ruins We spend our final morning in Lyon venturing into the rolling hills of Beaujolais, where vineyard after vineyard stretches across the landscape alongside picturesque medieval villages. It’s the kind of scenery you want to photograph at every turn. We then continue to Vienne, a city with deep Roman roots, where we’ll explore a stunning ancient amphitheater and the well-preserved Temple of Augustus and Livia.
Day 4 — Scenic Sailing: The Rhône River Today is all about sitting back, relaxing, and letting the beauty of France come to you. As we sail the Rhône, you’ll want to be on deck to take in the dramatic landscapes, terraced vineyards, and gorgeous countryside drifting by. Pour yourself something wonderful and enjoy the ride — this is river cruising at its finest.
Day 5 — Tournon & Viviers, France: Trains, Villages & TranquilityWhat a day! We start in Tournon, where we’ll board the nostalgic Train de l’Ardèche for a scenic railway ride through the lush, green Doux Valley. We then continue to Viviers, a small and peaceful riverside village tucked into a beautiful mountain setting. It’s the kind of place that slows you down in the best possible way — quiet streets, stunning scenery, and an ambience you simply can’t rush.
Day 6 — Arles, France: An Artist’s Paradise Arles inspired some of Van Gogh’s most famous works, and one look around will tell you exactly why. This captivating city blends Roman ruins, Romanesque monuments, and rich French culture into one unforgettable stop. History lovers and art enthusiasts, this one is truly for you.
Day 7 — Avignon, France: Grand Palaces & Provençal Flavor We arrive in one of France’s most breathtaking medieval cities. We’ll stroll the charming streets, admire the iconic Pont d’Avignon bridge, and visit the grand Palace of the Popes. Then we’ll slow down and savor the best of Provence — local wines, French delicacies, and the kind of afternoon that you’ll be telling people about for years to come.
Day 8 — Avignon, France: Until We Meet AgainOur last morning together as we disembark in beautiful Avignon. We’ll say our warm goodbyes, though something tells me none of us will be quite ready to leave! If you’d like to extend the magic, optional post-cruise additions to Paris, Burgundy’s Vineyards, or the Scenic Alpine Railways are available.
